Who I am…..

My name is Susan Tolles, and I live in Austin, Texas. I’m an enthusiastic member of the “Fabulous Fifties” group of women, those who have lived full lives with abundant blessings, now ready to begin a new chapter of my life.  I have been married for almost 30 years, and think I have the “perfect family.” I am close to completing my most important life-job–raising my three incredible children to become successful, godly young adults. I have had various jobs through the years–I’ve been an accountant, business manager, wedding coordinator, children’s ministry assistant coordinator, school board president, entrepreneur, and volunteer. Now what?

That’s what I will explore here, as I create a new vision for my future.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED FROM BEING OVER 50

Some of the things that being over 50 has taught me…………

Being over 50 has given me the freedom to explore things and grow. I am no longer so concerned about being a Super Mom–raising my children, volunteering in the schools, or hosting youth events. Now I can look outside my comfortable circle and discover the world all over again.

It’s more important to be beautiful on the inside than on the outside. I can exercise because I want to be healthy, not because I think I can look like Michelle Pfeiffer or Christie Brinkley, both in their 50′s. They have personal trainers, personal chefs and housekeepers.  I am my own trainer, cook and maid. But in that, I can focus on being humble, genuine, sincere, gracious and generous.

I still have a lot to learn. I have begun networking with other people from all over Austin. Events from luncheons geared toward women to networking business people. I’ve met fascinating people who are eager to share their knowledge, and to learn from me.

I don’t have to create a wonderful well-balanced meal every night with a meat, two vegetables and some sort of whole grain.  We’ll  live if dinner is “monochromatic.”

Keeping connections with family and friends is more important than ever. When my children were still in school and living at home, I was so busy that I didn’t try hard enough to nurture relationships. Now, through the genius of Facebook and blogging, I can reconnect, make new friends, and share the things that are truly important in life.

Even though I’m not a majorly successful businesswoman, I still have much to contribute. Maybe more. I have abundant life experiences that have taught me much, and I have been a servant in many capacities. Those  experiences have made me rich in wisdom and knowledge, which is more valuable than any career I could have had.

    • Thanks Susan for encouraging those of us who are “over 50″ to embrace life as never before! I have never felt better or been happier than I am now at 55! We’re not getting older, we’re getting better!” Life is ALL about attitude and as far as I’m concerned, I’m “fabulous at fifty something!” God bless you…

      • Brenda,
I am so encouraged by your kind words regarding my blog! Like you, I am loving life, and wanting to share insights and learn from others.

I am developing an “expanded” version of the blog that will include articles from other women on everything from aging gracefully to wellness and healthy eating to serving others. I am really excited about it and hope to get some good interaction going with fabulous women like you. We have a lot of living to do, and it is much more fun to do it with people who share our joys and passions!

Please check back again–I’ll be directing everyone to the new site when it gets closer what I vision for us all.

        Blessings,
        Susan

  4. Susan, I am fascinated by this picture. When I glanced at it the first time, it reminded me of San Francisco. Can you tell me where it is? Somewhere in Europe?
    Hope you are doing well.
